A tray route puts different demands on cable than conduit does. The run sits exposed; it can cross wet and dry areas in the same pull, and it often has to leave the tray to reach a motor, panel, or skid. That combination is what the Type TC-ER marking exists to cover.

Commodity Cables stocks VNTC-TC-ER for 600V tray and exposed-run work, plus MV-105 in 15kV and 35kV for medium-voltage tray installations. In-stock orders placed by 2:30 PM ship the same day from the closest of our 11 US warehouses.

What the TC-ER Marking Allows

Type TC is power and control tray cable, covered by NEC Article 336 and built for installation in a cable tray, raceway, or other approved support system. The ER suffix adds exposed run capability. In industrial establishments where only qualified persons service the installation, TC-ER can run exposed between the tray and utilization equipment, supported at the intervals the code requires. The tray system itself falls under NEC Article 392, which sets fill, support, and spacing rules.

For buyers, the practical effect is fewer transitions. One cable can carry the run down the tray and make the final drop to equipment, instead of changing methods at the tray edge.

Tray Cable We Stock

Cable Verified Construction Where It Runs
VNTC-TC-ER (600V) Uncoated annealed copper, PVC insulation with an individual nylon layer, flame-retardant PVC jacket, bare copper ground. UL 83 and UL 1277. Cable tray, exposed runs, direct burial, wet or dry locations
MV-105 15kV Copper conductor, 133% no-lead EPR insulation, copper tape shield, low-friction PVC jacket. UL 1072. 2 AWG through 1500 MCM. Tray, conduit, ducts, direct burial, wet or dry locations
MV-105 35kV Same documented construction as the 15kV cable at a 35kV class. 1/0 AWG through 1500 MCM. Utility and heavy industrial distribution in tray or duct

Specifying a 600V Tray Run

VNTC-TC-ER carries a marking set that covers most of what a 600V tray route asks for: Type TC-ER, THWN-2, 90C wet or dry, FT4, sunlight resistance, oil resistance, and direct burial. Construction tables cover three-conductor and four-conductor builds with a bare copper ground.

The selection questions that actually change the order are gauge, conductor count, whether the route sees water or sunlight, and how much of the run leaves the tray. The full construction tables and spec sheet live on the copper building wire page, and the VNTC-TC-ER listing sits in the copper catalog.

Medium-Voltage Cable in the Same Tray System

Plants that run 15kV or 35kV distribution often land that cable in tray as well. MV-105 supports approved installations in wet or dry locations, conduit, ducts, direct burial, and cable tray, with operating limits of 105C normal, 140C emergency overload, and 250C short circuit. Tray fill, spacing, and separation between medium-voltage and 600V circuits follow the NEC and the engineer’s design, so the layout should be settled before the cable is ordered.

Where Tray Cable Shows Up on Our Orders

Tray cable moves on industrial and heavy commercial work: manufacturing plants, water and wastewater facilities, warehouse and distribution buildings, and data center support systems. Motor feeders, VFD panels, instrumentation racks, and process skids all tend to ride the same tray system, which is why buyers on these jobs usually need 600V and medium-voltage cable from one source. See how this fits the broader industrial automation catalog.

Tray Cable FAQs

What is the difference between Type TC and Type TC-ER?

Type TC is power and control tray cable intended for installation in a cable tray, raceway, or approved support system. The ER marking adds exposed run capability, so the cable can leave the tray and run along a structure within the limits of the NEC and the product marking. Our VNTC is marked Type TC-ER. In industrial establishments serviced by qualified persons, that lets a run continue from the tray to utilization equipment without changing wiring methods.

Is VNTC-TC-ER approved for direct burial and wet locations?

Yes. The VNTC-TC-ER marking includes THWN-2, 90C wet or dry, FT4, sunlight resistance, oil resistance, and direct burial. Match the gauge, conductor count, and installation conditions to the approved project documents before ordering.

Can medium-voltage cable be installed in a cable tray?

Our MV-105 15kV and 35kV cable supports approved installations in wet or dry locations, conduit, ducts, direct burial, and cable tray. Tray fill, spacing, and separation from 600V circuits follow the NEC and the project engineer’s design, so confirm the layout before the cable is ordered.

What conductor sizes and configurations does VNTC-TC-ER come in?

The construction tables cover three-conductor and four-conductor builds with a bare copper ground. Send the gauge, conductor count, and footage, and we will confirm the stocked sizes and what is on the floor before the PO goes in.

How quickly can tray cable ship?

In-stock orders placed by 2:30 PM can ship the same day from the closest of our 11 US warehouses. Send part numbers, footage, and the delivery ZIP, and the quote comes back with stock, price, and ship date together.
