Most commercial jobs spec Cat 6 for horizontal runs, so the real decision is which build the install calls for. Plenum or riser jacket, shielded or unshielded, standard or no-spline. Commodity Cables stocks all seven versions, which means one purchase order covers the ceiling, the risers, and the noisy mechanical rooms.
Every build is 23 AWG four-pair copper and sits inside our broader category cable line. In-stock orders placed before the daily cutoff ship the same day from one of our 11 US warehouses.
| Build | Part Number | Jacket / Construction | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plenum | 6CMP234XX | CMP, UTP | Drop ceilings, raised floors, air-handling spaces |
| Plenum No-Spline | 6CMP234XX-NS | CMP, UTP, no cross-filler | High-count plenum bundles and tight terminations |
| Plenum Shielded | 6SHDCMPRX | CMP, shielded | Plenum runs in high-EMI environments |
| Riser | 6CMR234XX | CMR, UTP | Vertical backbone and general in-wall commercial runs |
| Riser No-Spline | 6CMR234X-NS | CMR, UTP, no cross-filler | Dense pathways and fast terminations |
| Riser Shielded | 6SHDCMRX | CMR, shielded | Noisy electrical environments, parallel power runs |
| Stranded | 6CMSTRX | CM, UTP, stranded conductors | Patch cords and equipment jumpers |
CMR riser Cat 6 handles vertical runs between floors and everyday in-wall work. CMP plenum is required in air-handling spaces like drop ceilings and raised floors, and it can always be substituted for riser, though the reverse is never true.
Shielding and spline are job-condition decisions. Add shielding when the pathway shares space with motors, ballasts, elevator equipment, or parallel power. Choose no-spline when labor and conduit fill drive the install, because dropping the cross-filler makes the cable smaller and more flexible, so it pulls easier and terminates faster on high-count work.
Cat 6 is the workhorse for office and campus horizontal cabling, IP camera and access control drops, wireless access points, VoIP, and building automation. On PoE-heavy designs, the 23 AWG conductor is the reason to spec it over legacy Cat 5e: less heat rise in packed bundles and more headroom when devices draw power and data on the same run. If the network plan has to outlive the building fit-out or push 10 Gbps the full 100 meters, step up to Cat 6A.
Cat 6 supplied by Commodity Cables can be covered by our 35-year structured cabling warranty, which runs 35 years from the date of installation registration. The system has to be registered with us before installation, and the installation has to follow the applicable TIA and ISO standards. Coverage applies to the UTP and fiber cable we supply, not to connectors, patch cords, or other connectivity hardware. Full terms and the claim procedure are on the warranty page.
Select CMP plenum for drop ceilings and air-handling pathways, or CMR riser for vertical shafts and standard in-wall commercial runs. When high bundle density or tight conduit fill slows down installation, specify no-spline versions (6CMP234XX-NS or 6CMR234X-NS) to eliminate the cross-filler, improve cable flexibility, and speed up terminations.
Specify shielded Cat 6 (6SHDCMPRX or 6SHDCMRX) when pathways run parallel to power lines, elevator motors, or industrial machinery. To prevent ground loops and maintain EMI protection, shielded runs must be bonded and grounded at the patch panel using shielded RJ45 jacks and field-termination plugs rated for 23 AWG.
Because 23 AWG solid copper conductors have a thicker insulation diameter than standard 24 AWG Cat 5e, always use Cat 6-rated modular plugs with staggered wire alignment or pass-through designs. For patch panels and keystone jacks, use standard 110 or Krone punchdown tools with the appropriate blades.
Contractors and integrators must register the project with Commodity Cables before pulling cable. The installation must use approved Commodity Cables copper or fiber products, adhere to TIA and ISO cabling standards, and submit passing field tester results upon completion.
Commodity Cables supplies bulk Cat 6 in 1,000-foot easy-pull boxes with descending sequential footage markings. Shielded and specialty jacket configurations can also be ordered on sturdy reels for heavy-duty commercial pull stands.
